Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

The Lord is faithful to his promises. (Deuteronomy 7:9) God is a warrior who keeps His promises. The defeat of Og demonstrates Gods power and faithfulness to His covenant.

Christological Connection

While not explicitly named, the victories prefigure Christs ultimate victory over sin and death. (John 16:33)

Systematic Theology

Gods Sovereignty. Gods control over nations and their destinies is evident in His giving Israel victory. "Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all." (1 Chronicles 29:11)

Law & Grace

The victories are a result of Gods grace, but contingent on Israels obedience to His law (even though the law is not explicitly referenced in this chapter) "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul," (Deuteronomy 10:12)

Personal Application

With trust and courage. Just as God delivered Israel, we can trust Him to guide and protect us. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
