“Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.— Zechariah 9:9
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; And the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.— Zechariah 9:10

Scholar Insight

"“Zechariah 9 presents a picture of both judgment on the nations and the arrival of a peaceful, humble king who will bring salvation.” - Ralph L. Smith, Word Biblical Commentary, Vol. 32: Micah-Malachi (Dallas: Word, Incorporated, 1984), p. 170."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is sovereign and powerful, executing judgment on the wicked but also showing mercy and faithfulness to His people. "Yahweh will appear over them, And His arrow will go forth like lightning; And the Lord Yahweh will sound the trumpet, And will march forth in the storms of the south." (Zechariah 9:14)

Christological Connection

The prophecy of the king riding on a donkey is a clear messianic prophecy fulfilled by Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. "Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Zechariah 9:9)

Systematic Theology

The kingship of Christ is highlighted. He is the promised King, righteous and bringing salvation. His reign extends over all the earth.

Law & Grace

The coming King is both righteous (fulfilling the Law) and bringing salvation (grace). God's covenant (Law) is also mentioned.

Personal Application

We should recognize Jesus as our King and live humbly, seeking peace and righteousness. We should also rejoice in His salvation. "Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you" (Zechariah 9:9)
