Scholar Insight

""Psalm 90 is a powerful meditation on the contrast between God's eternal nature and the brevity of human life. It calls us to a sober recognition of our mortality and a dependence on God's grace." - Derek Kidner, Psalms 73-150: An Introduction and Commentary (InterVarsity Press, 1975), p. 322"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's eternality. "From everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalm 90:2

Christological Connection

While not explicitly mentioned, Hebrews 13:8 says "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever". This relates to God's eternality.

Systematic Theology

The concept of God's immutability (unchanging nature) is a systematic theology concept. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." James 1:17

Law & Grace

Law is referenced in the fact that we are subject to God's judgement. "Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?" Psalm 90:11 Grace is referenced as we ask God to be merciful to us, to establish our lives and work. "Let your favor be upon us". Psalm 90:17

Personal Application

We should live our lives in light of God's eternality. "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12
