Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's faithfulness. "God had made them rejoice with great joy." (Nehemiah 12:43). God is the source of joy and fulfillment.

Christological Connection

The rededication of the temple foreshadows the dedication of our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ, a new and better covenant. "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own" (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Systematic Theology

Worship: This chapter illustrates the importance of corporate worship and the expression of gratitude to God for His blessings and protection.

Law & Grace

The obedience to the Law is highlighted, but the joy and thanksgiving expressed point to God's grace enabling them to fulfill His commands. "On that day men were appointed over the storerooms, the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them from the fields of the towns the portions required by the Law for the priests and for the Levites, for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered." (Nehemiah 12:44)

Personal Application

We should respond by cultivating a spirit of thanksgiving and actively participating in worship. "Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!" (Psalm 105:2)
