Matthew 12

Key Verses

Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are innocent? But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.— Matthew 12:5-6 So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And he stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like the other.— Matthew 12:12-13 But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from there. And many followed Him, and He healed them all, and warned them not to make Him known.— Matthew 12:15-16

Related Scripture

For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”Mark 2:28

Scholar Insight

"Jesus’ claim to be greater than the temple and Lord of the Sabbath directly challenged the Pharisees’ understanding of divine authority and their emphasis on ritual purity. His actions and words demonstrated that true worship involves acts of mercy and compassion, rather than rigid adherence to legalistic interpretations." - Darrell Bock, Jesus According to Scripture: Restoring the Portrait from the Gospels"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn that Jesus is compassionate, and has authority. Matthew 12:13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And he stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like the other.

Christological Connection

Jesus is presented as the Lord of the Sabbath, with authority to interpret and apply God's law. Matthew 12:8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Systematic Theology

Christology, is seen through his demonstration of his deity. Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

Law & Grace

The Pharisees represent a legalistic approach to the law, while Jesus demonstrates grace through acts of mercy and healing. John 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

Personal Application

We should focus on doing good and showing compassion, rather than getting caught up in legalistic interpretations of rules. Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Yahweh require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
