Scholar Insight
"Leprosy in the Old Testament was not just a physical disease, but also a symbol of sin and separation from God and community." - Leviticus (The Anchor Yale Bible Commentary) by Baruch A. Levine"
Theological Analysis
What we learn about God
God is concerned with both physical and spiritual health. "And the priest shall examine the diseased area on the skin, and if the hair in the diseased area has turned white and the disease appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a leprous disease. When the priest has examined him, he shall pronounce him unclean." (Leviticus 13:10, ESV)
Christological Connection
Jesus' healing of lepers demonstrates His power over disease and foreshadows His ultimate cleansing from sin. "And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed." (Matthew 8:3, ESV)
Systematic Theology
This relates to disease, healing, and separation. Leprosy symbolized a state of being set apart.
Law & Grace
The law defined the procedures for dealing with leprosy. Jesus' healings demonstrate God's grace and power to overcome even the most devastating diseases.
Personal Application
With compassion for those who suffer and with gratitude for God's power to heal.
