Jeremiah 28

Main Highlights

The prophet Hananiah opposes Jeremiah, falsely prophesying a quick return from exile, and Jeremiah prophesies Hananiah's death.

Key Verses

“Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of Yahweh’s house which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and carried to Babylon. And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,” declares Yahweh, “for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”’”— Jeremiah 28:2-4 “Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, ‘Listen now, Hananiah, Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. Therefore thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to die, because you have counseled rebellion against Yahweh.”’”— Jeremiah 28:15-16 “So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year in the seventh month.”— Jeremiah 28:17

Related Scripture

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.Galatians 1:8

Scholar Insight

"The conflict between Jeremiah and Hananiah highlights the importance of discerning true prophecy from false prophecy, a recurring theme in the Old Testament. - Robert Davidson, Jeremiah, Volume 1 (Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 1983), p. 277."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is truth and hates lies. He holds false prophets accountable for misleading his people. Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. (Jeremiah 28:15)

Christological Connection

Jesus warned about false prophets who would come in his name, deceiving many. Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (Matthew 7:15)

Systematic Theology

Divine retribution. God judges and punishes those who falsely claim to speak for Him. Therefore thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to die, because you have counseled rebellion against Yahweh.”” (Jeremiah 28:16)

Law & Grace

Hananiah's prophecy represents a false grace—a promise of easy deliverance that ignores the need for repentance and obedience to God's law. For they have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace. (Jeremiah 6:14)

Personal Application

Christians should be discerning, testing the spirits to see whether they are from God, and holding fast to sound doctrine. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)
