Isaiah 31

Main Highlights

Trust in God Alone, Not Human Alliances

Key Verses

"Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!"— Isaiah 31:1 "The Egyptians are man, and not God, and their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord stretches out his hand, the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall, and they all will perish together."— Isaiah 31:3 "Like birds hovering, so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem; he will protect and deliver it; he will spare and rescue it."— Isaiah 31:5

Related Scripture

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."Psalm 20:7

Scholar Insight

"Isaiah’s message is clear: Trust in God, not in human strength or alliances. True security comes from dependence on the Lord." - John Oswalt, The Book of Isaiah, Chapters 1-39 (NICOT)."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's sovereignty and his jealousy for our trust. "For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him." Isaiah 30:18 We see him as the "Holy One of Israel," emphasizing his unique and powerful nature.

Christological Connection

While not explicitly named, the promise of protection and deliverance foreshadows the ultimate salvation through Jesus. We can see that God will protect and deliver Jerusalem. "Like birds hovering, so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem; he will protect and deliver it; he will spare and rescue it." Isaiah 31:5

Systematic Theology

Dependence on God: This passage highlights the importance of relying on God's power and wisdom rather than human efforts.

Law & Grace

The passage implies a contrast between relying on human strength (which aligns with a "law-based" approach of trying to earn favor) and trusting in God's provision (which aligns with grace). When we trust in the Lord we shall be saved by grace. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" Ephesians 2:8.

Personal Application

People should cultivate a habit of seeking God's guidance in all decisions, avoiding the temptation to depend solely on their own abilities or worldly resources. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5
