Scholar Insight

"The extensive list in Ezra 2 is not just a dry record. It is a testimony to God's faithfulness to his promise to restore a remnant of Israel. - Derek Kidner, Ezra and Nehemiah (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries; Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 1979), 33."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is meticulous in His care for His people. He knows them by name. “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.” (Luke 12:6)

Christological Connection

This passage can be seen as an analogy to the church. Each member is important, just as each person in the list in Ezra 2 was important. “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” (1 Corinthians 12:12)

Systematic Theology

The Doctrine of the Church: God's people are not just a collection of individuals, but a united body, each with a role to play.

Law & Grace

The return to the land is an act of grace, but the attention to genealogy may be important to restoring the theocracy established by the law. “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)

Personal Application

We should value every member of the church and recognize that each person has a unique role. We should contribute our gifts and resources to the building up of the body of Christ. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)
