Related Scripture

"You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve."Matthew 4:10

Scholar Insight

""The destruction of pagan shrines and the centralization of worship were designed to prevent syncretism (the blending of different religious beliefs) and maintain the purity of Israel's faith." - Peter C. Craigie, The New International Commentary on the Old Testament: Deuteronomy (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1976), p. 208."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God's holiness and his intolerance of idolatry is emphasized. God is a jealous God, demanding exclusive worship and devotion. "Take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.’" (Deuteronomy 12:30)

Christological Connection

Jesus is the ultimate "place" where God dwells and where true worship is to occur. As the temple has been destroyed, we are now temples of the Holy Spirit and worship in Spirit and Truth. "Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father." (John 4:21)

Systematic Theology

The Doctrine of Worship: God prescribes how He is to be worshipped, and this worship must be pure and directed solely to Him.

Law & Grace

The law is presented by the command to destroy pagan sites and only worship in the appointed place. Grace comes through God's promise to be present in that one place, providing a way for His people to approach Him. "But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go," (Deuteronomy 12:5)

Personal Application

"You shall not do according to all that we are doing here today, everyone doing whatever seems right in his own eyes," (Deuteronomy 12:8). Christians should be discerning about the influences and practices they allow into their lives, ensuring they are not compromising their devotion to God with worldly or idolatrous pursuits. They should seek to worship God in spirit and truth, according to His revealed will, not according to their own preferences.
