Scholar Insight

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God provides confirmation and evidence to those he calls. He uses signs and prophecy to validate his choices. "When these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you." (1 Samuel 10:7)

Christological Connection

Again, the anointing of Saul with oil prefigures the anointing of Jesus as the Messiah, the "Anointed One."

Systematic Theology

Vocation. God calls individuals to specific tasks and roles.

Law & Grace

The Law required obedience and humility, which Saul initially displayed, but would struggle with later. God's grace is seen in his willingness to provide a king despite Israel's desire.

Personal Application

Seek confirmation of God's calling in your life. Trust in God's provision and guidance, even when facing opposition or doubt. "But he took no notice. (1 Samuel 10:27)
