Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is a caring shepherd who provides, protects, and guides. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. (Psalm 23:3). This reveals His character as a restorer and guide.

Christological Connection

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep, fulfilling the imagery of this Psalm. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep John 10:14-15.

Systematic Theology

Providence. God's active care and provision for his people in all circumstances of life.

Law & Grace

The Psalmist's reliance on God's shepherding care implies dependence on grace rather than earning favor through obedience to law. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ John 1:17.

Personal Application

We can trust God to provide for our needs and guide us through difficulties, resting in his peace and provision. Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all Matthew 6:31-32.
