Job 36

Main Highlights

Elihu continues his argument, extolling God's justice, power, and wisdom in dealing with both the righteous and the wicked. He encourages Job to trust in God's sovereign plan.

Key Verses

Bear with me, and I will show you, for there is yet more to be said on God's behalf. I will fetch my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne he sets them forever, and they are exalted.
See, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him?

Related Scripture

The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works."Psalm 145:17

Scholar Insight

"Elihu emphasizes that God's sovereignty and justice are intertwined. He is not arbitrary but acts according to His righteous character, rewarding the righteous and disciplining the wicked. This is meant to encourage Job to trust God's purposes even when they are unclear." - David Atkinson, The Message of Job (The Bible Speaks Today), p. 158"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's justice, power, and omniscience. "Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding." Job 36:5

Christological Connection

The concept of God rewarding the righteous and judging the wicked, albeit imperfectly in this life, points to the ultimate justice that will be established through Christ's judgment. Revelation 20:12 "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done."

Systematic Theology

Divine providence is emphasized. God is actively involved in governing the world and directing events towards His purposes.

Law & Grace

While focusing on God's justice and rewards, the passage also implicitly recognizes the need for God's grace, as no one can perfectly meet the demands of God's righteousness on their own. Romans 3:23-24 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,"

Personal Application

We should seek to live righteously, trusting that God sees our efforts and will ultimately bring about justice, even if we don't see it immediately. Philippians 4:6-7 "do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
