Related Scripture

He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world."1 Samuel 2:8

Scholar Insight

"Adele Reinhartz, in Esther (Jewish Women's Bible Series), argues that Esther's passivity and obedience are presented as virtues in the narrative, despite modern readers' potential discomfort with these traits."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God's sovereignty is evident in Esther's rise to power. "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21

Christological Connection

Esther, who conceals her Jewish identity, is a hidden savior of her people, a foreshadowing of Jesus, whose true identity was often veiled to many. "Though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” Philippians 2:6-7

Systematic Theology

Election. God chooses Esther for a specific purpose. "Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will..." Ephesians 1:4-5

Law & Grace

The laws of the land dictate who can become queen, but Esther finds favor (grace) in the king's eyes, transcending those laws. "For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” Romans 6:14

Personal Application

Be faithful in obedience to God, even when the path is unclear. Cultivate discernment, as Mordecai did, to recognize dangers and opportunities. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
