So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.”
And King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and saw the altar that was at Damascus. And King Ahaz sent to Uriah the priest a model of the altar and its pattern, exact in all its details.

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is a jealous God who desires exclusive devotion. Ahaz's idolatry is a direct rejection of God's covenant.

Christological Connection

Ahaz seeking help from a foreign king instead of God contrasts with the true king, Jesus, who offers salvation and protection.

Systematic Theology

Idolatry: The worship of false gods or anything that takes the place of God in our lives.

Law & Grace

Ahaz's actions demonstrate a complete disregard for God's law. While judgment is deserved, God's grace is seen in His continued offer of redemption through repentance.

Personal Application

We must guard against the temptation to compromise our faith for worldly gain or approval.
