Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant.1 Corinthians 13:4

Scholar Insight

"Saul's jealousy and ambition stand in stark contrast to Jonathan's selfless love. This illuminates the destructive power of pride and the redemptive potential of genuine friendship, rooted in covenantal commitment. - Walter Brueggemann, First and Second Samuel (Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching)"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We see God's hand in elevating David, despite Saul's opposition. God's sovereignty is at play. “And the Lord was with David and Saul became more and more afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.” (1 Samuel 18:12)

Christological Connection

David's anointing and God's presence with him is a foreshadowing of Jesus, the ultimate Anointed One, who is always in perfect communion with the Father. David being favored by God is likened to Christ who is also favored by God. “Then Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul was David's enemy continually.” (1 Samuel 18:29)

Systematic Theology

Election/Divine Sovereignty: God's choice of David, despite Saul's position, demonstrates that God's purposes will prevail, regardless of human opposition.

Law & Grace

Saul's actions demonstrate a legalistic focus on maintaining his power through the law, while David's success is attributed to God's favor and grace, despite his relative lack of status. "And Saul said, “I will give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “You shall this day be my son-in-law in the second of the two.” (1 Samuel 18:21)

Personal Application

We should strive to celebrate the successes of others without jealousy. We should cultivate friendships based on loyalty and selflessness, mirroring the love between David and Jonathan. “As the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:1)
