For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”1 Samuel 16:7

Scholar Insight

"The Lord's initiative is highlighted. Saul did not seek out the Lord to be king; the Lord arranged the meeting." - Dale Ralph Davis, 1 Samuel: Looking on the Heart (Fearn, Ross-shire, Scotland: Christian Focus Publications, 2000), p. 65."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's sovereignty. He orchestrates events (the lost donkeys leading Saul to Samuel) to fulfill his plans. “And the Lord had told Samuel in advance, “About this time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines, for I have seen their affliction, because their cry has come to me.” (1 Samuel 9:16)

Christological Connection

While not directly named, Samuel anointing Saul foreshadows the anointing of Jesus as King.

Systematic Theology

Election. God chooses Saul, even before Saul sought the role.

Law & Grace

The people had requested a king, even though God was their king, representing a rejection of his direct rule (Law), but God graciously responds by providing one.

Personal Application

Trust in God's plans, even when they are unclear. Be open to God's leading, even when it takes you in unexpected directions. “And he said to him, “Go ahead of me up to the high place, for today you shall eat with me. And in the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart." (1 Samuel 9:19)
