Scholar Insight

"The Christian family is meant to be a microcosm of the church, displaying in its relationships the love, respect, and mutual submission that should characterize the whole Christian community." - Clinton E. Arnold, Ephesians (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2010), p. 293."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is loving, holy, and desires that believers imitate Him. God is the source of light, and He calls believers out of darkness into His light. "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children" (Ephesians 5:1)

Christological Connection

Jesus is the example of sacrificial love, giving Himself up for the church. He is the head of the church, and husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25)

Systematic Theology

Christ's relationship to the church is an analogy for marriage. "This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church." (Ephesians 5:32)

Law & Grace

The law of Christ is demonstrated by showing believers how to live a life filled with light by making the most of their time. Grace is seen in the call to imitate God's love, a love demonstrated by Christ giving Himself for the church, showing that living in submission and love is how believers receive God's grace. "walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

Personal Application

Believers should walk in love and light, avoid immorality and foolishness, be filled with the Spirit, give thanks, and submit to one another in relationships. Husbands should love their wives sacrificially, and wives should respect their husbands. "Nevertheless, each individual among you also must love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband." (Ephesians 5:33)
