Scholar Insight

"Peter and John are not defiant; they are simply obedient to a higher authority. They are saying, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’ This is not an optional extra; it is a basic principle for every Christian.” - Warren Wiersbe, The Wiersbe Bible Commentary: New Testament (Colorado Springs, CO: Cook Communications Ministries, 2007), p. 439."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is sovereign and empowers believers to overcome opposition. We see this in the shaking of the building and the filling of the Holy Spirit.

Christological Connection

Jesus is the name by which healing and salvation come. The apostles are persecuted because they proclaim the resurrection of Jesus and his power to heal.

Systematic Theology

The authority of Scripture and the importance of obedience to God above human authority is seen here.

Law & Grace

The Jewish leaders tried to use the law to silence the apostles, but the apostles were operating under grace, empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the message of salvation through Jesus.

Personal Application

Believers should be bold in proclaiming the gospel, unified in community, and generous in sharing resources.
