Jonah 3

Main Highlights

Jonah obeys God's command and preaches to Nineveh, and the people of Nineveh repent and are spared from destruction.

Key Verses

Then the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the second time, saying, 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the proclamation that I am going to tell you.'; So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk.; Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.; When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

Related Scripture

If at any time I declare concerning a nation or kingdom that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the calamity that I intended to do to it.

Scholar Insight

"The repentance of Nineveh is one of the most remarkable events in the Old Testament. It demonstrates the universality of God's offer of salvation and the power of repentance to avert judgment. - Tremper Longman III, Jonah (New International Commentary on the Old Testament)."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is merciful and willing to forgive even the most wicked people if they repent. He is also patient, giving people opportunities to turn from their sin before bringing judgment.

Christological Connection

Jesus uses the repentance of the Ninevites as a rebuke to the unrepentant generation of his own time. He declares that they will stand in judgment and condemn that generation because they repented at the preaching of Jonah.

Systematic Theology

The sovereignty of God and human free will. While God had declared judgment on Nineveh, He relented when they repented, demonstrating that human actions can influence God's dealings with them.

Law & Grace

The law is represented by God's initial declaration of judgment. Grace is seen in God's willingness to forgive and withhold judgment when the people of Nineveh repent.

Personal Application

We should be willing to share the gospel with all people, even those we consider to be enemies. We should also be willing to repent of our own sins and turn to God for mercy, knowing that He is gracious and compassionate.
