Isaiah 45

Main Highlights

God is the sovereign Lord of all creation, using even pagan kings like Cyrus to fulfill His purposes for Israel's redemption and to reveal Himself to the nations.

Key Verses

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: 'I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.'— Isaiah 45:1-3 I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other.— Isaiah 45:5-6 Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.— Isaiah 45:22

Scholar Insight

"Isaiah’s remarkable prophecy concerning Cyrus is unique in that Cyrus is identified by name more than a century before his birth. It is also one of the most impressive prophetic announcements in the entire Old Testament. - H. VanGemeren, Isaiah, EBC (rev. ed.), 6:239."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about the sovereignty of God, his ability to foretell the future, his power over kings and nations (Lord).

Christological Connection

Though not explicitly named, Cyrus is an anointing in the old testament this references to anointment of kings and priests which is a shadow for what will be the ultimate anointing of God in the form of Jesus Christ.

Systematic Theology

God's sovereignty and providence. God is in control of all things, working even through unbelievers to accomplish his purposes.

Law & Grace

Law is not explicit. However, the promise of redemption for Israel, despite their past failures, hints at God's grace.

Personal Application

By trusting in God's sovereign plan, even when things seem chaotic or out of control. 'Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.' Isaiah 45:22. We need to look to God because he has a plan for all the earth.
