Scholar Insight

"Ruth 1 is an example of true loyalty; the loyal love that does not seek its own way, is not self-serving or self-seeking. Loyalty demands we go the distance and not quit on others in their difficult circumstances." David Guzik. (Enduring Word Commentary)"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We see God's providence at work, even in difficult circumstances. Naomi, though bitter, still acknowledges God's hand (Ruth 1:13). God's faithfulness extends to those who are faithful to others.

Christological Connection

Ruth's unwavering loyalty foreshadows the loyalty and devotion that Christians should have for Christ (John 15:13). Ruth's choice to stay with Naomi at all cost reflects Christ's choice to save humanity at all cost.

Systematic Theology

Covenant. Ruth's commitment to Naomi can be seen as a covenantal relationship, reflecting the covenants God makes with His people.

Law & Grace

Although not explicitly stated, Ruth's actions demonstrate grace as she chooses to love and serve Naomi despite Naomi's bitterness and hardship. "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17)

Personal Application

We should emulate Ruth's loyalty and commitment in our relationships, particularly when others are facing difficulties. We should also be willing to embrace people from different backgrounds, as Ruth (a Moabite) was embraced by Naomi. "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." (Romans 12:10)
