Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

"Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation." (Psalm 35:9) We learn that God is a source of salvation and joy for those who trust in Him.

Christological Connection

"They hated me without a cause." (Psalm 35:19) This references the coming Messiah, who was hated and persecuted despite being innocent. "But they have done this in order that the word that is written in their Law may be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’" (John 15:25)

Systematic Theology

The doctrine of justification is alluded to. The psalmist seeks vindication, which points to God's declaration of righteousness.

Law & Grace

Law is implicit in the psalmist's claim of righteousness. Grace is seen in God's promised deliverance and vindication: "But you, O LORD, do not be far from me! O you my help, come quickly to my aid!" (Psalm 35:22)

Personal Application

"Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long." (Psalm 35:28) We should respond with prayer for justice, trust in God's protection, and a commitment to speaking of His righteousness.
