Malachi 3

Main Highlights

The Lord will send His messenger to prepare the way, and then the Lord Himself will come in judgment and purification. The people are called to return to God by tithing and offering their best.

Key Verses

“’Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,’ says Yahweh of hosts."- Malachi 3:1
"’Return to Me, and I will return to you,’ says Yahweh of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.”- Malachi 3:7-8
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says Yahweh of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”- Malachi 3:10

Related Scripture

“For this is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’”- Matthew 11:10

Scholar Insight

"“Malachi uses the temple as a symbol of the presence of God among His people. The coming of the Lord to His temple, therefore, signifies the revelation of God’s presence in a powerful and decisive way." - Peter T. Vogt, Interpreting the Prophetic Books: An Exegetical Handbook (p. 165). Kregel Academic. Kindle Edition."

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is just, but also merciful, offering a way back to Him. He tests our obedience and promises blessings for faithfulness. “For I, Yahweh, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)

Christological Connection

The messenger who prepares the way is John the Baptist, and the Lord who comes to His temple is Jesus Christ.

Systematic Theology

Eschatology, particularly the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment, is alluded to.

Law & Grace

The people are rebuked for breaking the law by not tithing. Grace is offered as they are told to "Return to Me, and I will return to you." (Malachi 3:7)

Personal Application

We should be generous and faithful in our giving, trusting that God will provide for our needs. “Remember this: The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows generously will also reap generously." (2 Corinthians 9:6)
