Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's sovereignty and His willingness to inflict pain on even His chosen people when they turn away from Him. 'Yahweh has done what He purposed; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from the days of old; He has torn down and has not spared.' (Lamentations 2:17)

Christological Connection

Again, there is no direct reference to Jesus, but the suffering of Jerusalem can be seen as a symbol of the suffering that Jesus would endure for the sake of humanity.

Systematic Theology

Divine Justice is a systematic concept, it teaches that God is just and righteous in all that he does.

Law & Grace

The emphasis is on the law and the consequences of breaking it, rather than grace. However, the underlying message is that repentance and turning back to God is always an option. 'Arise, cry out in the night At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the face of Yahweh; Lift up to Him your hands For the life of your little ones Who are faint because of hunger At the head of every street.' (Lamentations 2:19).

Personal Application

People should respond with humility and a recognition of the seriousness of sin. They should examine their own lives and turn away from any behavior that is displeasing to God, seeking His mercy and forgiveness.
