Isaiah 28

Main Highlights

Woe to Ephraim's Drunkards and a Warning to Jerusalem's Leaders. Isaiah warns against the drunken revelry and false security of Ephraim and Jerusalem's leaders, contrasting it with God's true foundation.

Key Verses

Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of those bloated with rich oil, of those who are overcome with wine!" Isaiah 28:1
-"Therefore thus says the Lord God, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: "Whoever believes will not be in haste."''' Isaiah 28:16

Related Scripture

For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 3:11

Scholar Insight

"Isaiah 28 is a scathing indictment of the spiritual and political leaders of Judah, particularly their reliance on human strategies rather than divine trust." – John Oswalt, The Book of Isaiah, Chapters 1-39 (NICOT)"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

We learn about God's justice and holiness. He is a God who sees through hypocrisy and will judge those who reject his truth and rely on false security. "For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim; as in the Valley of Gibeon he will be roused; to do his deed—strange is his deed! and to work his work—alien is his work!" Isaiah 28:21

Christological Connection

The "precious cornerstone" in Isaiah 28:16 is often interpreted as a Messianic reference, prefiguring Jesus Christ, the foundation of our faith. “See, I am laying a foundation stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.” Isaiah 28:16 (NLT)

Systematic Theology

The Doctrine of Atonement is related to this passage. "I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter." Isaiah 28:17. This passage explains the justice that God must accomplish due to sin, yet he gives grace and a way of salvation in the messiah.

Law & Grace

God is offering grace and a firm foundation for those who believe (Isaiah 28:16), but the context shows the law is broken and judgement is coming to those who disobey the law. “Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of those bloated with rich oil, of those who are overcome with wine!” Isaiah 28:1

Personal Application

We should examine the foundations upon which we build our lives, ensuring they are rooted in faith in God rather than in temporary or worldly things. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5
