Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is El Shaddai, God Almighty, meaning He is all-sufficient and sovereign to fulfill His promises. He is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God who actively initiates and establishes relationships with humanity. 'Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be blameless.”' (Genesis 17:1)

Christological Connection

While Jesus is not explicitly named, the promise of a 'father of many nations' (Genesis 17:4-5) and the everlasting covenant with Abraham's 'seed' ultimately points to Christ. The New Testament teaches that believers in Jesus, whether Jew or Gentile, are the true spiritual 'seed' of Abraham and heirs of the promises through faith. 'Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed,' that is, Christ.' (Galatians 3:16)

Systematic Theology

Covenant Theology is profoundly illustrated here. God establishes a solemn, binding agreement (covenant) with Abraham, marked by promises, conditions (walking blamelessly), and a sign (circumcision). This particular covenant (the Abrahamic Covenant) is foundational to understanding God's redemptive plan throughout Scripture, leading ultimately to the New Covenant in Christ. 'And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your seed after you.' (Genesis 17:7)

Law & Grace

Grace is evident in God's unmerited initiative to make a covenant with Abraham, reiterating promises of land, numerous descendants, and blessings when Abraham was old and childless. The command to 'walk before Me, and be blameless' (Genesis 17:1) and the sign of circumcision (Genesis 17:10-14) represent a divine requirement, which, while given within a covenant of grace, foreshadows the legal aspect of God's relationship with His people, reminding them of their obligation and calling to holiness as a response to His grace. 'And I will make My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.' (Genesis 17:2)

Personal Application

Believers should respond with faith and obedience, trusting in God's omnipotent ability to fulfill His promises, even when circumstances seem impossible. They should also understand that the true sign of the covenant for New Testament believers is spiritual circumcision of the heart through Christ, prompting a life consecrated to God. 'For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and boast in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh,' (Philippians 3:3)
