Full Chapter: LSB ESV

Galatians 2

Main Highlights

Paul fiercely defends the truth that justification is by faith in Christ alone, not by works of the law, even recounting a time he had to publicly rebuke Peter for compromising this gospel truth.

Key Verses

But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.- Galatians 2:11
nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.- Galatians 2:16
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.- Galatians 2:20

Related Scripture

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.- Ephesians 2:8-9

Scholar Insight

""If faith alone is enough for a Christian, why does he not do works? To this we answer: The works of a Christian are not the cause of his justification, but they are the fruit and the proof of it." - Martin Luther"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is the righteous Judge who accepts no human works for salvation, choosing instead to justify sinners solely based on their faith in the finished work of His Son.

Christological Connection

Christ is the absolute center of salvation. To rely on the law is to nullify the grace of God and suggest that Christ died needlessly. Believers are spiritually united with Him in His death and resurrection.

Systematic Theology

Soteriology (Justification by Faith Alone). This is one of the clearest chapters in Scripture defending "Sola Fide"—that a sinner is declared righteous before God solely by faith in Christ, completely apart from human effort.

Law & Grace

The sharpest contrast between Law and Grace is drawn here. The Law cannot save; it only condemns. Grace provides salvation freely through Christ. Adding any requirement of the Law to the Gospel destroys Grace.

Personal Application

We must boldly protect the purity of the Gospel, refusing to add any human works or traditions to faith for salvation. We must live our daily lives entirely by faith in the Son of God.
