Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God is merciful and desires peace, even amidst division. He still speaks to His people through prophets. "For the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God..." 2 Chronicles 11:2

Christological Connection

The preservation of Judah points towards the ultimate preservation of the line of David from which the Messiah would come.

Systematic Theology

God's Word as Authority: The direct word of God, spoken through a prophet, supersedes even the king's desire.

Law & Grace

Grace is shown because God provides a prophet and asks to refrain from fighting their brothers. "Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, 'Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your brothers. Return every man to his home, for this thing is from me.'" 2 Chronicles 11:4 This shows grace because He is working through those that still serve Him.

Personal Application

We should seek to listen to God's voice, even when it is difficult, and pursue peace where possible. We should also defend what is right and true. "Let us therefore strive for what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding." Romans 14:19
