Scholar Insight

""John's assertion that 'God is love' is perhaps the most profound statement about God's nature in all of Scripture. This love is not a mere sentiment, but is demonstrated in the atoning sacrifice of Christ." - John Stott"

Theological Analysis

What we learn about God

God's fundamental nature is love. He initiated our salvation by sending His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Christological Connection

Jesus is the Son of God, sent as the Savior of the world. Acknowledging that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is the test of a true spirit.

Systematic Theology

Theology Proper (God's Nature) and Christology. God's love is active and substitutionary, and true doctrine must affirm the incarnation.

Law & Grace

We love because He first loved us. Our ability to fulfill the command (Law) to love others is entirely dependent on the indwelling Grace and love of God.

Personal Application

We must exercise spiritual discernment against false teaching, cast out fear through perfect love, and actively demonstrate our love for God by loving our brothers and sisters.
